Hero is a 6-year-old Shetland/Hackney Cross – bigger than a mini, but smaller than a pony - measuring about 40” at the shoulder. Picked up from a horse hoarder, we learned that he spent the first five years of his life in a small, dark enclosure, on a manure pile standing about 4 feet high. Forced to stand at an angle because of the slope of the manure pile, his muscles were atrophied and back legs seriously underdeveloped. When he arrived at SVHC in May 2023 he was terrified of human contact, and unable to be handled. He quickly became a volunteer favorite, and after a summer of loving care, attention and training on our ranch. Diana has been working with Hero pretty regularly this summer as a volunteer at the SummitValley Horse Center. In the first half of the season, he had to overcome some major panicky fears of darn near everything while she taught him the basics of roundpenning. Once his fears settled down, Diana began teaching him to long line. She had to do lots of preparatory work because he was very reactive to the leadrope touching his body, especially around his butt. (SCARY!) But with that done, he's made rapid progress in just a few sessions of actual long lining. As you can see here, he's still wanting to turn toward her when he stops, because that's essential in groundwork. But he's learning some new ways with some very gentle correction and lots of encouragement. Hero is transforming into a confident, loving, and strong little horse. Surrounded by so many volunteers that loved him, (many of whom made special trips to the ranch to visit him), Hero epitomizes all that SVHC stands for. Hero is looking for his forever home. https://summitvalleyhorsecenter.org/our-herd/meet-the-minis/67-hero

Obstacle Course Clinic We are changing up the Obstacle Course Challenge and this will now be three single day clinics, starting on Friday 27 September. The first day, Friday, will be SVHC members only, dedicated to our wonderful volunteers. No horse, no problem, we would love to try to pair you with one of our lovely horses! Numbers will be limited! ( And you must be able to meet our riding requirements-Please email Lizzie or Emily to verify riding requirements). On Saturday we will open to the public and again the focus will be training and education rather than just riding the course. Betina and Ray, from Next Step Horse Rescue and Spot On - Horse Training, both highly experienced obstacle course competitors and judges, will be conducting onsite training from 8am. Bring your horse, you will need a copy of a current negative Coggins! No overnight accommodation available. Sunday there will be another training session at 8am followed by groundwork and then we will have a fun competition afternoon, we will still be riding the course, but we will be judging the best turned out rider and horse. Do you have the most bling, are you color coordinated, are you dressed to a Halloween theme, the choice is yours, but our expert judge will decide if you are the 'best turned out'. Prize of lots of SVHC swag! To secure your place as a rider please sign up, https://summitvalleyhorsecenter.org/events/volunteer-calendar and if you have any difficulties signing up, please email Carole at This email address is being protected from spambots.
